Vermont

As I'm sure everybody that reads this blog already knows - gay marriage has been legalized in Vermont. This is significant in that it is the first state where gay marriage became legal via legislative action (verses judicial action).
  • it was passed by the legislature
  • vetoed by the governor
  • and the veto overridden by the legislature (23-5 in the senate, 100-49 in the house).
This is big! These are the types of successes that we need to see more of.

I find myself wondering if this would be the outcome had there not been a big battle on the other side of the continent. Perhaps this is the silver lining behind the prop 8 cloud - it brought gay marriage into the public consciousness - not just as a political issue, but as a real issue that affects real families.

The same thought came to my mind. I'd rather know where Rob's and my CA marriage stands legally, and prop 8 hurt, but I think it really did put steam behind and perspective into the pro-marriage equality movement across the nation.

  2. Would I be hauled before a Church court for blasphemy if I dared to say "God works in mysterious ways"?

  3. Hopefully, the way that this legalization came about can send a message to the rest of the country. Thank you Vermont! I always knew I loved you for a reason. :)

Alan, I thought that same thing in November. :) In fact, I think I said something to that affect in my interview for Reed Cowan's documentary in January, prefaced with "This may sound blasphemous, but I think God has a higher purpose with Proposition 8 that we don't understand yet."

    Great souls think alike!
