Saint Patricks Day parade

I went to the Saint Patrick's Day parade on Saturday. Below are a few of the pictures I posted to flickr. You can click on each picture to see a larger version. If you want to see more pictures then click on the following link:

In order to avoid the traffic, I drove to a metro station a couple of miles from the parade route and took the train the rest of the way.

There were a lot of people (think 1,000's). Here is the crowd waiting for the parade to start

Unfortunately, I was standing next to a couple of bimbo's who kept waving their hands in front of my camera clamoring for beads and other stuff being tossed. This is what I normally saw when I looked in my camera viewfinder

Some of the floats were quite elaborate

While others were quite simple2007-03-17_7274

Sorry, this just doesn't do it for me.

Do straight guys really go for this???

Do you think this was a BSA approved activity? I wonder if they got a tour permit?2007-03-17_7284

Of course, there was some of the more traditional things as well

And the aftermath...

I'm afraid they do, M.E., and worse.

See how much more wholesome it is to have SSA?

Nice pictures and commentary. Did the fears of corruption by people of questionable morals have any basis in fact?

No. Being a convert, I come from a rather colorful family background. Although my parents are devout Christians and eschewed alcohol and tobacco, not all of my siblings share in their devotion. Out of six children, only two of us don't smoke and I'm the only one that doesn't consume alcohol. In fact, two of my siblings are alcoholics (one recovered, the other in denial). My oldest daughter is the only granddaughter who didn't get pregnant before she was married. So, I'm not unfamiliar with being around people of questionable morals.

But, my wife knows all this. If you were referring to her concern about this specific event - she was thinking it was like a Gay Pride parade - which it isn't. There are actually a lot of families with children who attend this parade.

While I was at the parade I didn't see anyone who I thought might be gay. Although, after looking through my pictures, there are a couple that I'm wondering about - so I think my gaydar is busted.

Yeah, I was referring to your wife's earlier comment.

I don't know about where you live, but my local gay pride parade has become quite wholesome. There are lots of families with kids who attend (and not just gay families). I took my straight nephew who happened to be in town (fresh from graduating from BYU) to the gay pride parade. He was amazed to see 200,000 people line up and cheer the silly floats. I think it really made an impression. I know gay pride might be a touchier issue with your wife, but if you can make it you should go take some pictures of that parade when it happens. It would be interesting to see the comparison.

BTW, gaydar is unreliable these days. The gay and straight looks are all mixed up, especially with young people.

I thought the girls looked cold and washed out. Maybe they need to eat some more? They are certain to catch a chill wearing so little. LOL I'm completely at a loss for why anyone would go for that either. I'm going to the Parade in SLC with my adopted dad in a month or two, and I'm excited to be with him and have some fun. I hope all goes well with you M.E. and that your wife continues to be such a loving and strong influence for you. Best Wishes!
