Yet another awkward moment

Last night my daughter and I were watching Stargate Atlantis together. Afterwards, we sat on the couch just talking about stuff. Then, out of the blue, she started talking about Lance Bass (of 'N Sync fame) and how he had come out as gay ("why are the cute ones are always gay?" I think is what she said). We then started listing off other gay celebraties. She talked about how she just doesn't understand how someone can determine that they are gay. Seeing this as a teaching moment, I started to say something. But, then she said

"but you know what would be really weird? Having gay parents!"

Wow! That is totally awkward! I wish I could have been there to see that one....

Although, I think I agree with your daughter, that would be kinda weird. :)

Is that you and your daughter's picture or is that some random photo you found online?

I'm reasonably certain my children do not suspect they have a gay dad. When I told my wife earlier this year, she was totally surprised - and she presumably knows me better than anyone else. But, I can't be 100% certain.

I outed myself to my sister last night. It went like this:

"I didn't have the feelings in high school, even with the rumors about me."

"There's no way you're gay."

"...*cough*"

As the daughter of a parent who recently came out, I can definatively tell you that yes, it is weird to have a gay parent. It doesn't change how you feel about your parent, in fact it makes you love them more for the sacrifices they have made for you.

I would guess that your daughter probably doesn't know; children just don't think those things about their parents. When my dad came out to me, I was totally shocked. But as I thought about it, on some level, I had always known. The fact that my dad has SSA made total sense and answered a lot of questions for me. I actually found the whole experience quite healing.
